In Montgomery County, we stand at a crossroads.
The taxpayers of Montgomery County value high-quality essential public services, including our public school system that is regarded as one of the finest in the country.
Yet years of fiscal mismanagement by national leaders and the fall-out of mistakes by big business have left our state and communities with unprecedented economic challenges. Our financial crisis could not come at a worse time.
Montgomery County is changing rapidly, new census data proves that our county is not the wealthy enclave many believe it to be. We’ve seen a recent and rapid increase in the number of families in our county falling below the poverty line. Thousands of new students have enrolled in our public schools over the past two years – many of whom have disadvantaged backgrounds and unique challenges associated with such backgrounds – with literally no new revenue to cope with the growth.
Now is a time for residents to pull together as a community and seek means to weather the storm in the short-term and solutions to address underlying imbalances for the longer-term. We can find ways to maintain the high standards residents expect from our schools and our county services, even during this period of diminishing resources – but it will take vision and shared sacrifice.
Made up of parents, teachers and other school system employees, students and other stakeholders, Our Future Montgomery seeks a way forward out of our temporary – though dismal – economic circumstances and toward a brighter future for our great county. This path must involve wise and adequate investments in our institutions and our communities and most of all in our children – for they truly are Our Future Montgomery.
Specifically, we urge our elected leaders not to deny our schools the limited and essential resources they need to maintain the incredibly high standards, for which our county is known.
